All participants will be issued an Achievement Booklet where they may put their badges they have earned for specific skill completion.

Upon successful completion of each course, swimmer will be issued an American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Course Completion Card. 

Parent and Child Aquatics

WATERFRONT LIFEGUARDING

COURSE INFORMATION


(must be 15 years old on or before final class date)

Prerequisite Swim Test

1. Swim 550 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing using front crawl and/or breaststroke - goggles allowed.

2.  Tread water for 2 minutes using only your legs.

3.  Complete a timed event within 1 minute 40   seconds:  Swim 20 yards, surface dive head or feet first down to a depth between 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10lb diving brick, surface, and swim back 20 yards to the starting point with both hands on the brick and exit water without using steps - goggles not allowed.

4. Swim 5 yards, submerge and retrieve three dive rings placed 5 yards apart in 4-7 feet of water, resurface and continue to swim another 5 yards - goggles not allowed.

WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTOR COURSE:    $300

COURSE PREREQUISITES

Be at least 16 years old on or before the last day of the Instructor Course.
Demonstrate the ability to perform the following swimming skills:

1. Swim the following strokes consistent with the Stroke Performance Charts, Level 4:
     o Front Crawl – 25 yards
     o Back Crawl – 25 yards
     o Breaststroke – 25 yards
     o Elementary Backstroke – 25 yards
     o Sidestroke – 25 yards
     o Butterfly – 15 yards

2. Maintain position on back for 1 minute in deep water (floating or sculling)

3. Tread water for 1 minute


BASIC SWIM INSTRUCTOR COURSE:      $275

COURSE PREREQUISITES

Be at least 16 years old on or before the last day of the Instructor Course.
Demonstrate the ability to perform the following swimming skills:

1. Swim the following strokes consistent with the Stroke Performance Charts, Level 3:
     o Front Crawl – 25 yards
     o Breaststroke – 25 yards
     o Elementary Backstroke – 25 yards
     o Sidestroke – 25 yards
     
2. Maintain position on back in deep water for 1 minute 

3. Tread water for 1 minute

4. Step into water/totally submurge, float/tread water for one minute, rotate one full circle, orient to exit, swim 25 yards w/o stopping and exit water.

Course has two delivery methods: Instructor-Led, or Blended Learning (Online & Instructor Led). If enrolled in a Blended Learning course, prior to the first on-site skill session, be sure to complete the Orientation to the Swimming and Water Safety Program. To access this orientation:

Complete the Orientation to the Swimming and Water Safety Program. Upon completion, be sure to print signature page and bring it to the first session as evidence of completion.

Download your course materials – Water Safety Instructor’s Manual - (on the right side click on the tab that says participant and download the Water Safety Instructor’s Manual only (download to phone not preferred).  Manual must be downloaded prior to coming to the course as there is no wi-fi available on site. 


Certification Requirements
To become certified as a Water Safety Instructor, instructor candidates must:


 -Successfully complete the Precourse Session
- Attend and actively participate in all course sessions
 -Successfully complete class activities, including the required practice teaching assignments
 -Score a minimum of 80 percent (40 correct answers out of 50 questions) on the final written exam

Certificate Issued and Validity Period: American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor is 2 years.  Instructor must teach one course of record (submit roster) and complete the online update within the certification validity period) to renew their certification.

 -Demonstrate the ability to accommodate participants who move, learn, communicate and behave differently

The American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Course is to provide entry-level lifeguards with the knowledge and skills needed to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to  provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illness until emergency services personnel take over.

Requirements to enroll in the course:
Age 15 prior to the last day of the class and successfully pass a pre-course swim test that includes:


1. Swim 300 yards continuously either using freestyle or breaststroke or combination demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing.

2. Tread water for 2 minutes using only legs

3. Timed event:  Swim 20 yards, surface dive to a depth of 7-10 feet, retrieve 10 lb. brick and surface with both hands on brick, return to starting point continuing to hold brick with both hands without submerging and exit water without using ladder.
